WACHAPREAGUE

  • The Home of Jane & Paul Berge:

    31144 Bunting Point Road

    Melfa, Virginia 23410

Don’t panic about the Melfa mailing address—we’re still in Wachapreague nestled between Burtons Bay and Bradford Bay tucked just along the Wachapreague Channel.

Parking is limited on site so we urge guests to carpool to the venue as much as possible.

  • Google Maps will be your friend (and potentially also your enemy)!

All roads (mostly) lead to Wachapreague via US-13. And (pretty much) all routes require tolls.

From the DC Area: (about 4 hours)

US 50E to 13S (tolls on route)

    95S to 64E to 13N

    113S to 13S

From the VA Beach Area: (about 90 minutes)

    13N all the way!

From the Philadelphia Area: (about 4 hours)

    DE-1S to 113S

    13S all the way!

Parking is limited on site so we urge guests to carpool to the venue as much as possible. Rideshare in Wachapreague may not be readily available so, again, carpooling as much as possible will be helpful.

  • Dancin’ Shoes!

We recommend dressing for the environment which, in this case, is a grassy waterside backyard.

Definitely wear shoes comfortable for walking outdoors.

Temperatures can range pretty significantly, so bringing layers is never a bad move. In the September sunshine it can be about 80° but once the sun goes down, the temperature tends to drop into the low 60’s, which can feel chilly, especially with a breeze.

We’re certainly hoping to avoid any rain, but it does happen. We’ve got a tent to keep us all VERY cozy and mostly dry in the event of questionable weather, but please do check the radar for the area and plan your wardrobe accordingly.

If you need a more succinct answer to the “What to wear?” question, the internet suggests that “Festive,” “Casual,” and “Come As You Are” would all be applicable terms for our event.

  • There are lots of small seaside towns in the surrounding area with a variety of different housing options! Anything that’s within a 20 minute drive is well within a reasonable commute for the area. Opening up your travel time to 35 minutes will definitely afford a wider range of housing styles & price points.

Air BnB or VRBO will get you a smattering of adorable Fishing Retreats, Seaside Cottages, and Crew’s Quarters in and around Wachapreague & Onancock (across Lankford Highway from Wachapreague).

The Wachapreague Inn has a small selection of rooms of varying sizes as well as a 2 bedroom apartment and a 5 bedroom house for rent. They also list their availability on some short term rental sites, so you may see this information displayed in a number of different places.

Exmore and Belle Haven, VA are about 15-25 minutes south of Wachapreague along Lankford Highway. They are a convenient hub for more mainstream dining, shopping, banking, and church-going in the area.

Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Exmore

Hampton Inn & Suites in Exmore

Quality Inn & Suites in Exmore

When booking your stay, don’t forget to take advantage of any discounts available to you: AARP, AAA, Active & Retired Military, etc. Several of these housing options are also available for booking through 3rd party rate discount sites like Expedia, Kayak, Trip Advisor, Travelocity, Booking.com, etc.

  • Totally an option! There’s plenty of space to spread out on property, but please make sure to give us a heads up in your RSVP if you are expecting to camp on site so that we can take camping space adequately into consideration when planning our decor & table layouts!

Make sure to bring your own camping necessities if you’re planning to join us. Charlie takes up pretty much all of the space in our tent, so we won’t have any room to squeeze other campers in with us!

  • Friday night we’re happy to host a VERY low key backyard barbecue & crab pick for any out of town guests who may already be in the area.

Feel free to bring something potluck style if you want, but certainly no obligation!

We’ll be doing some last minute decorating and we’re content to have all hands on deck for extra help — just make sure you’re dressed for an outdoor evening filled with climbing step stools to hang string lights and eating seafood with your bare hands.

Please reach out to us directly if you’ll be joining us Friday evening so that we can share more specific details and include you in our headcount.

  • THE WEDDING, OF COURSE!

All times listed in VENUE LOCAL TIME.

    (Wachapreague is Eastern Time.)

    **Doors Open: 1:30PM

    Ceremony: 3:00PM

Cocktail Hour: 3:45PM (or whenever the ceremony ends)

    Reception: 4:00PM-9:45PM

    Dinner: Between 5:00PM-6:00PM

    Party Time: 6:00-9:30PM

    ++Soft End of Night: 9:45PM

**There are no doors to open - you can just come into the yard. We’ll still be getting ready, but there will be lawn games & other activities to occupy your time if you choose to show up early! Please avoid showing up much earlier than 1:30PM as we may still be setting out decorations!

++We won’t be kicking anyone off the property at 9:45PM, but we will be shutting down the music & chaos. In addition to being respectful of our hosts and their neighbors, there may be some guests who choose to camp on site. The “party” might continue a-la low key, late night fireside chat, but will not be allowed to continue in the form of a raging disco after 9:45PM.

  • Sunday morning we’re happy to host a VERY low key backyard brunch & recovery session for any out of town guests who may still be in the area for a more leisurely return home.

Feel free to bring something potluck style if you want, but certainly no obligation! We’ll probably be eating leftover wedding food in addition to providing some light brunch fare.

We’ll definitely be doing some last minute event strike & venue cleanup, so we’d be thrilled to have any extra hands on deck for added support — just make sure you’re dressed for an outdoor morning and afternoon filled with climbing step stools to drop string lights and crawling around in the grassy aftermath of our dance floor looking for your college friend’s dignity.

Please reach out to us directly if you’ll be joining us Sunday morning so that we can share more specific details and include you in our headcount.

  • Virginia is for Lovers! Check out this list of fun to-do’s on the Eastern Shore, which includes classics like visiting the Assateague Lighthouse and Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, both of which are only about an hour from Wachapreague!

Chatham Vineyards on Church Creek is a family owned & operated winery about 30 minutes away that offers tastings pretty much daily. Their site also offers links to several other foodie attractions in the area, so even if you’re not into wine, definitely still worth a look!

If you’re into antiquing, the Blue Crow Antique Mall is the place to be and it’s less than 15 minutes away!

If a bookstore is more your vibe, check out Book Bin in Olney, also only about 15 minutes away, and locally owned and operated. PS. They serve coffee & wifi! Open weekdays and Saturdays until 4:30PM.

Definitely not for everyone, but if you fall on the more Lesley-side of the adventure seeking scale, Hang Gliding is also totally an an option. (Or kayaking, or paddle boating…)

  • Cell service in Wachapreague can be spotty—phone calls will be a safer bet than text messages, and you may need to be prepared to wander around or stand on top of a roof to find solid signal. (Kidding a little about the rooftop standing, but not about the touch & go cell service.)

If you still have questions, head on over to our FAQ page to see if we’ve already addressed your concerns there.

If you’re not having any luck finding answers elsewhere on our site, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us! You can always submit a question on our Contact Form or just email or text one of us directly.
